സ്വതന്ത്ര പണിയിടമായ (Desktop System) ഗ്നോം 2.20 ലക്കത്തില്‍ മലയാളം ഔദ്യോഗിക പിന്തുണയുള്ള ഭാഷയായി ചേര്‍ക്കപ്പെട്ട കാര്യം എല്ലാവരും അറിഞ്ഞുകാണുമല്ലോ? 80% പരിഭാഷ പൂര്‍ണ്ണമാക്കിയതുകൊണ്ടാണു് ഈ നേട്ടം നമുക്കു് നേടാനായതു്. ഇതിനായുള്ള തിരക്കു പിടിച്ച പരിഭാഷകളില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത എല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും അഭിനന്ദനങ്ങള്‍.

ഇപ്പോള്‍ 74% (പുതിയ പല പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും നേരത്തെയുള്ള പ്രയോഗങ്ങളില്‍ തന്നെ പുതിയ വാക്യങ്ങളും ഗ്നോം 2.24 ല്‍ വന്നതു് കൊണ്ടാണിതു് താഴേയ്ക്കു് പോയതു്) പരിഭാഷ പൂര്‍ത്തിയായി കിടക്കുന്ന ഗ്നോം 100% പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്തുകയും അതുവഴി പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും മലയാളത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു പണിയിട സംവിധാനം തയ്യാറാക്കുകയുമാണു് നമ്മുടെ അടുത്ത ലക്ഷ്യം. കൂടാതെ ഇതു വരെ നാം പൂര്‍ത്തീകരിച്ച എല്ലാ പരിഭാഷയും ആദ്യം മുതല്‍ തെറ്റുകള്‍ പരിശോധിക്കുകയും തിരുത്തുകയും വേണം.

കെഡിഇയും തൊട്ടുപുറകേ തന്നെയുണ്ടു്. ഇച്ചിരി വൈകിയാണു് തുടങ്ങിയതെങ്കിലും ഗ്നോം നൂറടിയ്ക്കുന്നതിനു മുമ്പേ നൂറടിയ്ക്കണം എന്നതാണു് കെഡി മലയാളം കൂട്ടത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം :-)

പരിഭാഷകള്‍ പരിശോധിച്ചു് തെറ്റുകള്‍ തിരുത്തുന്നതോടൊപ്പം പരിഭാഷ ചെയ്യാതെ വിട്ടുപോയ വാചകങ്ങള്‍ തര്‍ജ്ജമ ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്താല്‍ 100% മലയാളം പണിയിടം എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യം നേടുകയും പരിഭാഷയുടെ കാര്യക്ഷമത വര്‍ദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യാം.

പ്രാദേശികവത്കരണം (Localization) എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന സോഫ്റ്റുവെയര്‍ വികസനരീതിയുടെ ഈ ഒരു വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നതിനു് സാങ്കേതിക ജ്ഞാനം അത്യാവശ്യമല്ല എന്നതാണു് പ്രത്യേകത. പ്രത്യേക രീതിയില്‍ ഒരു ഫയലില്‍ ഉള്ള ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വാചകങ്ങള്‍ക്കു് അവയുടെ അര്‍ത്ഥം മനസ്സിലാക്കി അതിനെ മലയാളത്തിലാക്കി ആ ഫയലില്‍ തന്നെ എഴുതിയാല്‍ സംഗതി തീര്‍ന്നു.

ഓരോ സോഫ്റ്റുവെയര്‍ പ്രയോഗങ്ങളും അവ ഉപയോക്താക്കളോടു് ഇടപഴകാനുപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വാചകങ്ങളെ (സ്വതവേ ഇതു് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലാണു്) ഒരു ഫയലില്‍ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. .po എന്ന എക്സ്റ്റന്‍ഷനോടു കൂടിയ ഈ ഫയലുകള്‍ ഒരോ ഭാഷയിലെയും നമ്മളെ പോലെയുള്ള കൂട്ടായമകള്‍ എടുത്തു് തര്‍ജ്ജമ ചെയ്തു് കൊടുക്കുന്നു.

#* പ്രയോഗത്തിന്റെ പേരിനോടൊപ്പം എത്ര ശതമാനം പരിഭാഷ പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നു് എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ടാവും. 100% ആണെങ്കില്‍ നമ്മള്‍ ചെയ്യേണ്ടതു് തെറ്റുകള്‍ തിരുത്താനുള്ള പരിശോധനയാണു്.അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ പരിഭാഷയും തിരുത്തലും നടത്തണം. .pot എന്ന ഫയലാണെങ്കില്‍ അതിനര്‍ത്ഥം ആരും പരിഭാഷ തുടങ്ങിയിട്ടില്ലെന്നാണു്. ഡൌണ്‍ലോഡ് ചെയ്ത ഫയലിന്റെ ഒരു പകര്‍പ്പെടുത്തു് .po എന്നു് മാറ്റി പരിഭാഷ തുടങ്ങാം.
# ആ ഫയല്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ പരിഭാഷപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചാല്‍ നമ്മുടെ മെയിലിങ്ങ് ലിസ്റ്റിലേക്കു് ഒരു കത്തിടുക. "ഞാന്‍ ഇതില്‍ കൈ വച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടു് വേറെയാരും തൊട്ടു പോകരുതു്" എന്നു് പറഞ്ഞു്. അബദ്ധത്തില്‍ വേറെയാരും അതേ ഫയല്‍ തന്നെ പരിഭാഷ ചെയ്യാതിരിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ടിയുള്ള ഒരു മുന്‍കരുതലാണിതു്.
# എന്നിട്ടു് ഒഴിവു് സമയങ്ങളില്‍ പരിഭാഷ ചെയ്യുക. നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കിഷ്ടമുള്ള എഴുത്തിടം (text editor) ഇതിനായി ഉപയോഗിയ്ക്കാം. നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കിഷ്ടമുള്ള നിവേശകരീതിയും (input method)... poedit, kbabel, gtranslator എന്നീ പ്രയോഗങ്ങളുമുപയോഗിയ്ക്കാം.

# ഇത്രയും ചെയ്തു് കഴിയുമ്പോള്‍ നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കു് അഭിമാനത്തോടെ പറഞ്ഞു നടക്കാം ഞാന്‍ ഒരു സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റുവെയര്‍ വികസന പങ്കാളിയാണെന്ന് (Free Software Contributor). ഫയലില്‍ തര്‍ജ്ജമ ചെയ്തവരുടെ പേരുകള്‍ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഇടത്തു് നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരു് ഗമയില്‍ വെണ്ടക്കാ അക്ഷരത്തില്‍ എഴുതാന്‍ മറക്കല്ലേ.. ആ ഫയലിനെ കോപ്പിറൈറ്റും നിങ്ങള്‍ മുന്‍ തര്‍ജ്ജമക്കാരോടൊപ്പം പങ്കിടുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ഒരു പ്രയോഗം പരിഭാഷ ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ ആ പ്രയോഗത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ സാധ്യതകളെ പറ്റിയും നിങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു.
# അടുത്ത പടി വേറൊരു PO ഫയല്‍ എടുത്തു് നടപടിക്രമം 1 മുതല്‍ തുടങ്ങുകയാണു്. അതിനി ഞാന്‍ വിശദീകരിക്കേണ്ടതില്ലല്ലോ :)

പയ്യന്‍സ് ആസ്കി ഫോണ്ടുകളുപയോഗിച്ചെഴുതിയ മലയാളത്തെ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടര്‍ പ്രൊസസ്സിങ്ങിനു യോജിച്ച യൂണിക്കോഡ് മലയാളത്തിലേക്കു് മാറ്റുവാനുള്ളാ ഒരു പ്രോഗ്രാമാണു്. ഫോണ്ടു് ഡിപ്പന്റന്‍സി വളരെക്കുറച്ചുകൊണ്ടു് ലളിതമായ ഒരു മാപ്പിങ്ങ് ഫയലിന്റെ സഹായത്തോടെ ടെക്സ്റ്റ്, പീഡിഎഫ് എന്നീ ഫോര്‍മാറ്റുകളില്‍ ആസ്കി ഫോണ്ടുകളുപയോഗിച്ചെഴുതിയ മലയാളത്തെ ഇതു് യൂണിക്കോഡിലേയ്ക്കാക്കുന്നു. യൂണിക്കോഡിലുള്ള ഫയലുകളെ ആസ്കി ഫോണ്ടുകള്‍ക്കു ചേര്‍ന്ന രൂപത്തിലാക്കാനും പയ്യന്‍സ് ഉപയോഗിക്കാം

Malayalagrandham.com is an online Malayalam literature bibliography service, inspired from Malayalam Granthasooji of K M Govi, a documentation of all Malayalam books published before 1995.The current system provides only a minimal level search option of the book. The data is to be organized as MARC21 format. The proposed system is to have different types of user which may be broadly classified as

• Publishers can add their publication details to the database, use the QR code that links to malayalagrandham page. Database contains ISBN code of the books which can be used to identify the publisher.

• Users can search for books based on different fields. Search is to be optimum and should be able to be filtered based on different fields, like publisher, author, year of publication etc. Users can also add entries to the system after logging in.

• Each book will have a “found in library section” and this can be edited by librarians.Thus librarians can have their library contents updated and available through malayalagrandham

• The entries added by users must be monitored and should be verified by a panel before being published. This may be done by a class of privileged users

The must be an API that can be used by developers to access the malayalagrandham project. The API must be documented well so that it can be used by developers for both accessing data of malayalagrandham database and also to add entries to the database.

The system can also have provision for uploading or liking to copyright expired books. Wiki Grandhashala contains some of the copyright expired books in Malayalam, thus the Malayalamgrandham page can have references to those wiki pages or elsewhere.

To develop an automatic continuous speech recognition system for a language , an acoustic model and language Model has to be developed for that particular language. At present acoustic and language models , for continuous speech recognition , are not available for Malayalam Language .

===Synopsis===

The project aims at building an Acoustic model and Language Model for Malayalam language using CMUSphinx toolkit , which will be very
useful for research and development purposes in Malayalam Speech Recognition and Processing area . Project also aims at applying
optimisations to the ac oustic data and text corpora used for training to improve the efficiency of the model .Efficiency of the model
will be calculated as WER(Word Error Rate).

CMU Sphinx is an open source toolkit for speech recognition developed by carnegie mellon university.It contains series of speech recognizers of which latest is sphinx4 , acoustic model trainer (sphinx train) and a statsitical language model builder (cmuclmtk). For developing a continous speech recognition system we need well trained acoustic model and language model.An acousitc model process audio recordings with their transcriptions and form statstical representations of word. A language model describes the likelihood, probability, or penalty taken when a sequence or collection of words is seen. CMUSphinx project comes with several high-quality acoustic models and language model for language like english, french, spanish etc.

The aim of this project as a whole is to develop a high-quality acoustic model and language model for malayalam.

The entire project can be subdivided in four parts :

:*Collection of data

::1.Collecting voice data and making transcription for acoustic model

::2.Collecting text corpora for language model

:*Optimising the database

:::Careful selection of voice and text data that can better represent the language , can be performed at this stage/phase so that quality of the acoustic model and language model created can be improved.Text data can be optimised using grapheme to phoneme converters and optimal text selection algorithms. Selecting appropriate speaker and analysing data statistics can lead to better acoustic data .

:*Training the acoustic model

:::Acoustic modeling of speech typically refers to the process of establishing statistical representations for the feature vector sequences computed from the speech waveform. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is one most common type of acoustic models. We use SphinxTrain ,to train the acoustic model, which is based on HMM. The quality of the model can be increased significantly by adjusting the parameters of the trainer(sphinxtrain). The tedious task of finding the appropriate language specific parameter values and configuring the trainer is done during this stage.

:*Building language model

:::A language model gives the probabilities of sequences of words. Here for continuous speech speech recognition we use statistical modelling of language using CMUCLMTK. Estimating the probability of sequences can become difficult in corpora, in which phrases or sentences can be arbitrarily long and hence some sequences are not observed during training of the language model (data sparseness problem of overfitting). Hence forming a good quality language model is a challenge.

with swathanthra malayalam computing i used to share ideas and attended meetings, i have produced opensource software for visually impaired on opensource platform(it is mentioned at the end of this proposal).

I've been working for open source for more than three years. and i want to remain all of my applications as open source. from the below mentioned facts I prove myself to be the apt candidate to take up the proposed project.

== Proposal Description ==

I express my gratitude to swathanthra malayalam computing for accepting my idea of six approch of br for XKB,Gtk and QT. I here by express a brief overview of my project.

Braille is a writing and reading system using six raised dots. As a night writing method of writing developed by Charles barbier, it has been perfected by louis braille. The most relevant feature of braille system is that the world community became successful in creating a unified code for all the languages based on its phonetics.

Bharati braille is a largely unified braille script for writing the languages of India. which use a 6-dot cell with values based largely on English Braille. It consists of 11 scripts including malayalam. Letters are assigned as consistently as possible across the various regional scripts of India as they are transliterated in the Latin script, so that Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and English are rendered largely the same in braille. also bharati braille retains all the basic conventions relating to the representation of numerals, punctuation and special symbols just as in standard English Braille. Like english indian languages also have contractions and special abbreviations which make text writing faster than normal, for example hear is the Grade-3 contraction list for English.

It is in consideration of this fact, lot of apps has braille output along with the screen readers(BRLTTY with orca)and braille translators (Dots,Liblouis). At the same time there is no input method using the six key approach of the braille to produce text.

Application's which are currently available in Linux Repositories.[edit]
BRLTTY : is a background daemon which provides access to the linux console for a blind person using a refreshable braille display -

Dots : - Dots is braille typesetting program for Linux, it can translate XML and MS DOC files and displays it both ASCII and braille dot notation.

liblouis : - provides Braille translation and formatting for a large number of languages and Braille codes.

Orca : a screen reader which support Braille refreshable display's

Sharada-Braille-Writer : one of my projects, it is a simple text editor which use six key approach of brailler to input text. But it has a big limitation that is it cannot be used for other application as a layout works.

Since there is no existing braille layout, My plan is to make a Braille Keyboard layouts extension for XKB.

== Relevance of braille as an input.==
1. it is very simple, uses only six keys of the keyboard.

2. It is specially important for indic languages which use more than fifty alphabets.

3. Having the same code for all the languages of india unified, known as bharathi braille there is no need for learning different layouts.

4. braille is a highly efficient system for it can use contractions and abbreviations and it can enhance the text production speed to a great extend.

5. braille is a world standard and a braille input method will make it accessible and user friendly for visually impaired, persons with limited hand movement, dysluxic

I have already developed the applications in this direction named Sharada-Braille-Writer. It is a text editor using six key approach to produce print in different indian languages along with english.

== How i intend to implement my proposal ==

Brailler is an equipment for producing braille(6 dots) materials in a fast and efficient manner, so i selected f, d, s, j, k and l representing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 dots of the braille system.

Create a Braille module and framework for XKB. for which use the mapping files of key(to be pressed simultaneously) -> letter. Eg:

In order to produce 'a' one has to press 'f' and for 'b' 'f' and 'd' together to be press, and for 'c' f and j like, 'h' will be used for letter deletion and 'g' and 'h' together for word deletion.

Create plugable braille extention for GTK and QT. This will be

Integrate third grade contractions for english and malayalam.

Add punctuation and numerals as separate map for these two extentions.

Integrate Orca screen reader(via making orca script) along with this XKB layout so that there exists no accessibility issue.

A rough timeline for your progress with phases[edit]
Jun 10 - 15 : collect more data of standard contractions and abbreviations of indian languages which is currently not available in internet.
Jun 16 - 27 : create the main framework with options to add,edit,remove map.
Jun 28 - 30 : add english map for primary test.
July 1 - 5 : add english contractions and abbreviations.
July 6 - 16 : Create sample extension for m17n.
July 17 - 20: make a primary test with the support of mentor.
July 21 - 31: add Hindi and malayalam maps,abbreviations and contractions.
Aug 1 - 2 : Add punctuation and numerals as separate map.
Aug 3 - 10 : add other maps for tamil,kannada and all other languages excluding Urdu and Sinhala.
Aug 11 - 18 : fix accessibility problems
Aug 19 - 23 : secondary test in malayalam,hindi and english with native people who know's braille.
Aug 24 - 30 : Try to include contractions and abbreviations for all other languages.
Sept 1 - 5 : Review code and database. also fix bugs and get ready for final evaluation.

*Having the camp at RH office could be the biggest plus of the event . It helped the event both in terms of logistics and participants. Also since every l10n/i18n member is associated with RH there was atleast one helping hand for 3 newbies . Discussions deserve a special mention as the participation was duplex. I really liked the one on fonts . I would like the students to have more hands on experience translating and just wish that the efforts put in camps such as this should be concentrating on one language . SILPA project has a spellchecker written using python with a not so simple algorithm. But still it is not capable of handling inflection and agglutination happening in Indian languages especially south indian languages. The dictionary we have for Malayalam spellchecker is having 150000 words. Of course we can expand the dictionary, but that has no much value since words can be formed in Malayalam or Tamil etc by joining multiple words. In addition to that, words get inflected based on grammar forms(sandhi), plural, gender etc. Hunspell has a system to handle this, but so far nobody succeeded in getting it working for multi level suffix stripping as required for Malayalam. Some times a malayalam word can be formed by more than 5 words joining together. We will need a word splitting logic or a table taking care of all patterns. The project is to attempt solving this inside hunspell. If that is not feasible(hunspell upstream is not active), develop and algorithm and implement it.

[http://it.mesce.ac.in/wiki/index.php/Developer_Camp| Developers Camp-2] is being scheduled on 27 Feb at our college, a joint exercise by Swathanthra Malayalam Computing (SMC), Students Association of Information Technology (S@IT), MES-FSUG and Zyxware Technologies.
Workshop camps like these are usually more of *hands-on* in nature, addressing real-world problems. With SMC-Zyxware the problems have an added dimension as they attempt to solve problems which a community closest to our hearts would cherish to use - they being linked to our native language - malayalam.

A previous such camp was organised at Vidya Academy in 29 November 2010, details of which can be found at http://wiki.smc.org.in/Developer_Camp/VAST and http://www.vidyaacademy.ac.in/?q=node/898

Lets make history by being there - right in the midst of similar problems and use our collective will in solving them. For the third years, this should be a golden opportunity to work with such problems as their Final Year projects or as their mini projects. Some of the known giants in Swatantra Malayalam Computing are expected to be around !!
